Shared statement regarding our decision to reschedule the February 3rd webinar

Sunday, January 30th, 2022

***Please note that our webinar ‘Fake Clinics & the Threat to Repro Justice’ has been rescheduled to February 7, 2022 at 7pm CST. Please click the button below for the updated webinar time and day. Thank you so much for continuing to fight for abortion justice!***

Reproductive Transparency Now (RTN) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) want to be transparent about why we changed the time and day of our webinar. It came to our attention that the original day of the webinar coincided with the potential release of killer cop Jason Van Dyke. People across the city are mobilizing to demand that federal charges be brought against Van Dyke and we want to be with the people on this day.

The struggle against police brutality is the struggle for abortion justice. The same courts, the same judges, and the same system uphold racism and sexist bigotry. Just this week, SB8 (Texas’ six-week abortion ban) was upheld by the Supreme Court for the fourth time since September 2021. Make no mistake, racial injustice is reproductive injustice and there cannot be justice without a movement that fights back for our Black siblings and all oppressed sectors of society that know that things need to change. These changes must include a complete shutdown of crisis pregnancy centers and every institution that is funded to keep us unsafe.

In 2018, the people won justice when the first Chicago Police Dept. officer, Jason Van Dyke, was charged with second degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery. He has served three years, less than half of his already short sentence. Van Dyke shot Laquan McDonald 16 times, and city officials refused to release a dash cam recording of the murder for over a year. The cover-up of his murder led to an outpour into the streets demanding justice. It was the people that put Jason Van Dyke in jail. That same type of movement can and will win reproductive justice. Please join us in seeking justice for Laquan McDonald on February 3, 2022, 5pm CST at Federal Plaza (219 S. Dearborn).

It is our duty to fight for our rights to abortion access, and it is our duty to win! We can regenerate the movement for reproductive justice by calling for actions in our city, putting pressure on our elected officials, and making uncompromising demands, like the demand to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. Now is the time for a grassroots movement to struggle for this victory to end racism and legalize abortion, once and for all.  Now is the time to stand up against all injustices because we will not go back, we will fight back!
